Issue #5, February 2008

Are we in for a new era in Higher Education?...

... whether we are or not, we are in for a new series of it figures for 2008. And we start the new year with a quick run down on how our admissions and enrolments are shaping up. We also get an update on the latest CEQ, PREQ and AUSSE results. And what's that about a seminar we're running?

The team in Statistical Services are also ready for the new year having met recently at the Premier Inn at Belconnen for our annual Planning Day (see picture below).

The Go8 Executive Dashboard has been recently updated. It shows some of the key information for the eight institutions over the past five years (2003-2007) such as: student load; load funding; finance; staff; CEQ results; L&TPF; and research. It's definitely worth a look. MORE >>

Not more about university rankings!!

When you thought we'd spoken enough about ranking systems, here comes some more information! Late last year Ross Williams from the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at Melbourne University released a study called "Ranking Australian Universities: Controlling for Scope". It gives a slightly different slant on things. Check it out here.

try this quick quiz

Just for the fun of it, there are eight trivia questions relating to tertiary education both here and overseas for you to try (and thanks again to Rob Sheehan from AAIR for these).

  • In what year did women first graduate officially at Cambridge University?
  • How many undergraduate students were there at Harvard University in 2006-2007 academic year?
  • How many Australian Commonwealth Ministers of Education have there been since 1968? Name them?
  • In which year were Australian universities allowed to charge market fees to international students?
  • How many universities were there in New Zealand in 1958?
  • How many TAFE institutes are there in Australia?
  • How many Private Registered Training Organisations are there in Australia?
  • In 2002, which country had the highest number of passenger cars per 100 people? (well this isn't related to tertiary ed but what the heck!)
