Issue #8, November 2008

Christmas Greeting 2008

In this, the last issue for 2008, the entire staff of the Statistical Services would like to extend their warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. We are pleased to report to you that the AAIR Forum, which we hosted in November in partnership with the Research Office, was very successful. This issue contains interesting figures regarding the growth and the gender mix of ANU staff, as well as the results of the First Year Experience Questionnaire. There is a very brief snapshot of our international student growth which is a mere introduction to a more detailed analysis coming in the new year.

ANU hosted the Australasian Association for Institutional Research 2008 Forum 19-21 November

AAIR Forum 2008

So why were we in Statistical Services so excited? What is institutional research anyway, and what does it have to do with us? Well, institutional research is exactly what we do here in E&F Blocks of the Old Administration Area. It involves ‘the collection, analysis and interpretation of information descriptive of an institution and its activities, including its students and staff, programs, management and operations. The findings of such institutional research can assist institutional leaders (in both academic and administrative domains) through informing their planning and decision making.’

ANU in world’s top 20 universities

Sceptics abound when the various global University rankings hit the press, but there is no denying that these rankings confer a large degree of prestige on the universities in the upper echelon. Indeed, they have apparently captured the intense interest of prospective employers and students.

The Times Higher Education QS rankings have retained ANU in 16th place for the third year in a row, just between Cornell University and Standford University. The top of the table is dominated by the US and UK, with the best-rated university from another country being the ANU! More >>

Bradley Review Report Expected December 2008

The Higher Education Review, which was announced in March this year promised to create diversity in the university system with funding linked to this diversity through negotiated mission based compacts. Briefly, compacts are purpose specific contracts between public universities and the Government, describing their funding commitments and university obligations. These compacts will be negotiated with each university, for implementation in 2010. Highly research-focussed universities will be funded differently from regional universities who will have more of a focus on serving their community. More >>

Some ANU staff figures to chew over…

Between 2001 and 2005, the annual growth in the total staff FTE (full-time equivalence) hovered between 6% and 7%. After a fall of 1% in 2006, the recent two years have shown an annual growth in total staff FTE of 1%. In the meantime, teaching and research staff growth has shown a strong increase of 5% in 2008. ANU First Year Experience Questionnaire, 2008

Ms Monique Gasson was the lucky winner of our survey prize draw, having participated in the recent ANU 2008 First Year Experience Questionnaire (FYEQ). She was presented with her new iPod Touch by Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Elizabeth Deane. We’d like to thank Monique and all her fellow first year students who participated in the survey. From a survey population of 2060, we achieved a response rate of 47%, with respondent demographics broadly representative of the first year population. MORE >>

iMIS - Research Performance available!

The University’s new Integrated Management Information System (iMIS) is now live. Initial functionality includes a suite of reports on research grants and publications.

In the coming months and years the system will expand to include reports on all areas of university operations including student enrolments, HR and workforce planning, facilities management, and budgeting and forecasting.

Members of the iMIS team are currently touring the University demonstrating the new system to staff in the Colleges. Please contact the iMIS Business Solutions Office (iMIS@anu.edu.au) if you are interested in attending one of these sessions, or for more information about iMIS.
