AAIR 2009 Forum is in Adelaide!

Issue #9, February 2009

The time has come...

The time has come for staff to return from their annual holidays and the students begin to fill the quiet with their jolly chatter. As the campus comes to life, figures sprout, to be chewed, ruminated and demystified, more so in Statistical Services than anywhere else!

This issue will give you an overview of our latest admissions figures. The Group of Eight Executive Dashboard has been updated to cover 2008, and this will show you the student and staff load, research and finance data for ANU and the other Go8 members over five years. As promised, this issue will look a bit more closely at the age profile of our academic staff, and tell you more about our gender balance. But wait, there is more!

Strong demand for places at ANU in 2009

Students at O-Week

The ANU has again experienced strong demand for both undergraduate and postgraduate places in 2009. The University Admissions Index (UAI) cutoffs for domestic applicants have risen for a majority of programs. Even the financial crisis of late 2008 doesn't seem to have dissuaded international students.

International students in Australia

Most of us know that international students have become our second highest income source after our natural resources exports, but how many have delved into the students’ response to their experiences in Australia? Dr Zakir Rhamani of DEEWR presented the results of his survey 2006-2007 at the AAIR Forum last November. The survey covered three main inquiries -

  • Choice to study in Australia
  • Level of satisfaction with studying and living in Australia
  • Future career plans and aspirations.

With a sample size of over 14,000 international students (total number of overseas students in 2006 was 250,794), Dr Rahmani garnered a rosy picture of Australia as a tertiary study destination – 85% very satisfied with overall living experience, 83% very satisfied with their course and 85% very satisfied with their overall study experience. On the other side of the coin, while 81% would like to have more Australian Students as friends, 48% perceived that Australian students do not seem interested in forming friendships with international students. Some staff and student profile figures

Despite the publicity surrounding the antics of baby boomers and superannuation law changes, the age profile for ANU staff and students as a whole has not changed markedly in the last five years. More >>

Students' first year experience in the Colleges

Following the release of our report on the ANU First Year Experience Questionnaire 2008, our office has now compiled a series of supplementary reports at the College level for the six colleges that have an intake of ‘new to university’ students.

College reports from the 2008 FYEQ are available for the ANU Colleges of Arts and Social Sciences, Asia and the Pacific, Business and Economics, Engineering and Computer Science, Law and Science.

Each report contains a summary of the survey population, program satisfaction ratings, students’ views on teaching and teaching related items, online engagement and resources, how students are coping, as well as student finances and attitudes towards study.

Any academic or general staff may request a copy of their College’s report by emailing Leone Nurbasari.

Staff changes in our office

Before Christmas we farewelled Anatoli Lightfoot who has gone to greener pastures in BITRE (Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics). With heavy hearts, we sent Anatoli off with all our best wishes. At the beginning of this month, we welcomed Julie Knight, from across the Tasman. MORE >>

iMIS - Research Performance available!

Have you heard of iMIS i.e. the Integrated Management Information System? Do you know that it has two components? They are –.

  • The Budgeting and Financial Planning application. This has been put on hold temporarily but is expected to resume development within the next few weeks.
  • The Business Intelligence application that is focused on management information reporting. This had its third release on lucky Friday the 13th this month.
    • The latest release provides a new “Academic Contribution” report and expands the research data available;
    • Information on research supervision is planned for a future release;
    • It is intended to progressively roll-out more functionality through a series of focused releases;
    • The progress to date has only been possible through the co-operative efforts of staff across the ANU and, in particular, those of the Research Office. The efforts of the Student Business Solutions group have also been vital in advancing the development of the research supervision component to the present point.

Pivot Table training

Are you new to ANU or have you recently changed to a new role? Do you need to access data relating to numbers of ANU staff or students, teaching load or program completions? We can help you access that information via the Excel Pivot Tables on the Statistical Services website.

We will run our popular hands-on pivot table training sessions (based on Excel 2003) in the last week of April. The sessions open for enrolment are:

  • Tuesday 28 April, morning or afternoon
  • Wednesday 29 April, morning or afternoon
  • Thursday 30 April, morning or afternoon

A basic understanding of Excel is strongly recommended before you enrol in a session. We provide all materials, as well as light refreshments. To register for a training session, simply go the training catalogue in HORUS and select course code SSPT01. Then select the session you’d like to attend.

If you'd like some one-on-one or small group training, just let us know.
