Issue #10, May 2009... The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while [figures] will drop off like autumn leaves. Indeed, in this issue, we show you some ANU data from the 2009 Australian Bureau of Statistics Research and Development Data Collection; some figures relating to demographic changes in Australia and their impact on student enrolments in the next 50 years, according to a recent study; and some numbers from the Garnaut Report. Fresh and re-energised after a recent strategic planning day, the Statistical Services team is keen to whet your appetite for figures. 500,000 more students in the next 50 years! The Go8 Backgrounders are rich and valuable sources of information on issues relating to higher education and university research. Eight have been published since October 2007. A recent issue presented an analysis of ‘Demographic impact on higher education enrolments’ i.e. how the projected population increase in the next 50 or more years will affect domestic demand for university places. For example, taking a conservative approach and assuming current rates of participation, present fertility rates (1.8), net overseas migration and life expectancy, the nation’s student population - which has just cracked through the million mark in the last two years - is projected to grow by another 500,000 in the next 50 years.
