Surveys

Introduction

These reports summarise the findings from surveys carried out through the year to gauge the experiences of students on campus and to track their destinations on graduation. The surveys are carried out either internally or in conjunction with national organisations. The results of the surveys inform the University Executive and Deans and Directors, as well as form the basis of ratings in the tertiary sector.

First Year Experience Questionnaire

Report on First Year Experience

The survey of undergraduate students' first year experience is carried out every two years. It measures various aspects of their first year experience at ANU, including:

  • program satisfaction
  • views on teaching
  • peer and online engagement
  • students' time and finances as well as facilities, services and other related issues

Results of the First Year Experience Questionnaire are distributed to the University Executive and Deans and Directors. Results are also conveyed to incoming teaching staff at induction seminars.

Graduate Destinations Survey

Report on Graduate Destinations

The University surveys its graduate students twice a year and reports back to the Graduate Careers Council of Australia, on their employment and further study. The aspects covered include:

  • employment options
  • salary and general labour market trends
  • further study

Percentage results for employment and further study are used in calculations for the Learning and Teaching Performance Fund, while employment rates and aggregated salary data are used to derive star ratings in the Good Universities Guide.

Program Experience

The same Graduate Destination Survey mentioned above also collects the following information:

  • Postgraduate research students' experience on
    • supervision
    • skill development,
    • intellectual climate,
    • infrastructure,
    • thesis examination,
    • clarity of expectations and
    • overall satisfaction
  • Coursework students' views on
    • teaching
    • generic skills
    • overall satisfaction
    • intellectual motivation

Australasian Survey of Student Engagement

In 2007, ANU participated in the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE), run by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The AUSSE is designed to measure a student's engagement with educationally enriching activities, based on six scales:

  • academic challenge
  • active learning
  • student and staff interactions
  • enriching educational experiences
  • supportive learning environment
  • work integrated learning
