Course (Program) Experience Questionnaire

Twice yearly the ANU surveys all graduates to collect information about their perceptions of their ANU program experience.

Coursework students are surveyed using the national Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) labelled at ANU as the Program Experience Questionnaire. The CEQ comprises two core scales, Good Teaching and Generic Skills, as well as an Overall Satisfaction item. Two optional scales, Graduate Qualities and Intellectual Motivation are also included.

Survey results are compiled on an annual basis, and contribute to a national dataset which institutions can use for benchmarking purposes. Institutional CEQ results have been used by DEEWR in perforamce funding calculations (Learning and Teaching Performance Fund), and are also used to derive star ratings in the Good Universities Guide.

At the ANU, scale results and national benchmarks are compiled into broad fields of education (designed to approximate College structures) and groupings of narrow fields of education (aimed at replicating schools or departments). The results are distributed to University Executive as well as Deans and Directors.

2009 Preliminary Survey Results

After last year’s highest ever results, levels of satisfaction with ANU coursework programs are still high, with 80% of graduates indicating satisfaction with their program. While national comparative results won’t be available until April 2010, it is expected that ANU’s ratings will remain above national levels for program satisfaction.

2008 Postgraduate CEQ

Among Postgraduate Coursework graduates, agreement levels on all scales (Good Teaching, Generic Skills, Graduate Qualities, Intellectual Motivation) are at their highest level in the last five years and above Group of Eight and national levels of agreement agreement levels. Overall Satisfaction is also at its highest level in the last five years, with 84% of respondents agreeing that they are satisfied with the quality of their program compared to 72% nationally.

2008 Undergraduate CEQ

Bachelor and Diploma graduates have rated Good Teaching at its highest level in five years, while levels of disagreement continue to decline. Agreement levels on the other scales (Generic Skills, Graduate Qualities, Intellectual Motivation) and the Overall Satisfaction item are also at their highest levels in five years, and are above the Group of Eight and national results.
