ANU Graduate Destinations

The annual Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) is part of the Australian Graduate Survey (AGS) which is coordinated nationally by the Graduate Careers of Australia (GCA). The survey seeks information on the activities of new graduates approximately four months after the completion of their qualification. It provides very useful data on employment options, salary and general labour market trends for graduates.

Typically, ANU achieves a survey response rate of 55% for the AGS. As not all graduates choose to return the survey, the survey results reflect the number of respondents only, not the total number of graduates in each discipline.

2009 Preliminary Survey Results

Results from the 2009 Australian Graduate Survey show that employment outcomes for our graduates are still strong.

Of the domestic bachelor and diploma graduates who were available for full-time employment, 84% were employed in full-time work within four months of completing their program. Of those, almost half were employed in the private sector (47%) and one-third (32%) were employed in the public service. Smaller proportions were employed in the health and education sectors (7% and 5% respectively).

From our domestic postgraduate coursework cohorts, over 90% of those available for full-time work were employed in full-time positions. The main employment sectors for Postgraduate Diploma graduates were the public service (54%) and the private sector (39%). The main sectors for our full-time employed Masters Coursework graduates were the public sector (52%), the private sector (27%) and a lesser proportion (8%) in education.

Results from our domestic PhD graduates show a different pattern to the other cohorts. Of the 85% of domestic graduates already in full-time postitions, 58% were employed in higher education, followed by 24% in industry.
