Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire

Twice yearly the ANU surveys all graduates to collect information about their perceptions of their ANU program experience.

Research students are surveyed using the national Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ), which includes items in scales covering Supervision, Skill Development, Intellectual Climate, Infrastructure, Thesis Examination, Clarity of Expectations and an Overall Satisfaction item.

2009 Preliminary Survey Results

Preliminary results from the 2009 PREQ show that levels of agreement on the Supervision scale have improved in 2009 and with a result of 76% are now on par with previous national results. This improvement comes about as levels of dissatisfaction with supervision have decreased.

The Infrastructure and Thesis Examination scales have achieved high ratings in 2009, however, the Clarity of Expectations and Intellectual Climate scales have dropped slightly from 2008, as have the results for Overall Satisfaction.

2008 PREQ Results

Higher Degree Research graduates’ ratings of Overall Satisfaction are now at their highest level in more than seven years with over 88% of respondents satisfied with their higher degree research experience. Levels of agreement on a number of other scales (Infrastructure and Skill Development) are also at their highest levels in seven years.
