Codes & classifications

Through the Commonwealth Grant Scheme (CGS), the Australian Government subsidises tuition costs for higher education students across a wide range of discipline areas and qualification levels. The level of Commonwealth Support and Student Contribution amounts are determined by course load and course Field of Education (per the Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED)), organised into funding clusters, as defined in the Department of Education and Training funding cluster documents referenced here.

These Fields of Education are also utilised to categorise courses into bands and tiers, for the purpose of International and domestic fee setting.

Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED)

ASCED comprises two component classifications: Level of Education and Field of Education. This provides a basis for comparing administrative and statistical data on educational activities and attainment. ASCED is managed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Higher Education Information Management System (HEIMS) help

HEIMSHELP provides information about the data requirements and reporting procedures for Higher Education providers and is managed by the Department of Education and Training. Codes used by HEIMS and the Higher Education Client Assistance Tool (HEPCAT) are described in the HEIMS help file. Several other useful coding and classification systems are collated in its appendices.
