Student Experience of Learning & Teaching (SELT)

Overview

The Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) is a survey run by the ANU Institutional Research team and administered to the student population. It is one of the University's major tools for monitoring course development, academic development and student satisfaction.

SELT surveys are run in each teaching session at ANU: Semesters 1 and 2 (standard sessions) and Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring (non-standard sessions).

There are two main survey components: the End-of-course Survey and End-of-course Teacher Survey.

End-of-course Survey (Course Evaluation)

Previously known as the Student Experience of Learning Support (SELS), this survey collects feedback at the class level and has a primary focus on quality assurance, with the survey intended to help course conveners, Colleges and the University to monitor the quality of support for students' learning.

The questionnaire has been standardised for common use across ANU and focuses on collecting quantitative and qualitative feedback from students, with quantitative outcomes made available to College and University management and enrolled students. Qualitative outcomes are made available to course conveners and relevant academic staff.

End-of-course Teacher Survey (Teaching Evaluation)

Previously known as the Student Experience of Teaching (SET), this survey collects feedback of individual academic staff teaching and has a primary focus on quality enhancement, with the survey intended to assist teachers in their professional development.

The questionnaire focuses on collecting quantitative and qualitative feedback so that teachers can better understand the student experience and continue to develop their skills and teaching approaches. As these are developmental tools, they are intended for use by the individual academic staff member, who may also discuss their feedback with supervisors.
